Benefits of the SOAP Bible Study Method
The SOAP Bible study method has so many things to offer! First, it gives you a clear guide to studying the Bible, so you have a plan in place before starting your daily Bible reading. Secondly, it helps you carve out small snippets of time to draw closer to God as you spend time in His word.
This effective method also makes you think about how to apply the Bible to your daily life, which is the most important thing to gather during your scripture reading. It’s so easy to use, no matter how much you know about the Bible!
How Do You Use the SOAP Bible Study Method?
The S.O.A.P acronym stands for scripture, observation, application, and prayer. It’s a simple and powerful tool to understand God’s word and get closer to Him. By following these four steps, you can learn more about the Bible on a daily basis.
Scripture
The first step of the SOAP Bible study method is picking a passage of scripture that you want to study. It could be a Bible verse or a particular passage. This simple method also works in conjunction with topical study. The important thing is to choose something that speaks to you and you’d like to explore more. I like to take bite-sized chunks of the Bible so I usually choose one Bible passage that speaks to me that day.
Once you have your selected passage or verse of scripture, write it down and read it multiple times to get familiar with it. Pay attention to any words or phrases that catch your eye or seem intriguing. This step helps you truly grasp the passage before moving on to the next part of the study.
Observation
Now that you’ve chosen your Scripture passage, it’s time to dive into observation. This step is all about closely examining the text and asking questions to understand it better. Look for key themes, repeated words, and any patterns in the passage.
Evaluate the context in which it was written and who the author was addressing. Take notes as you go, jotting down any insights or observations you discover.
Consider keeping a SOAP journal to help keep you on track. This second step helps you dig deeper into the text and understand the multiple facets of God’s word.
Application
Once you have observed the passage, it’s time to move on to application. Take what you’ve learned from the Scripture and apply it to your own life. Look at how the passage relates to your current situation or challenges.
How can you put its teachings into practice in your daily life? This step is about making the Scripture relevant and useful in your own circumstances and allowing the word of God to work in your heart.
Prayer
The last step of the SOAP Bible study method is prayer. Once you’ve observed and applied the Scripture, take a moment to pray and reflect on what you’ve learned. Thank God for His word and ask the Holy Spirit to help you apply it to your life.
Seek wisdom, guidance, and understanding as you continue to study His word. This step is crucial for building a stronger connection with God and allowing His truth to shape and mold you. Having a heart-to-heart conversation with your Heavenly Father and inviting Him to be a part of your journey will change your life.
How to use the SOAP Bible Study Method Effectively
To get the most out of the SOAP Bible study method, it’s important to approach it with intentionality and consistency.
Set aside dedicated time: Schedule regular Bible study sessions and stick to them. Consistency is key to developing a habit and reaping the rewards of this method. Personally, I find mornings to be the best. When I wake up early to talk to God, it sets a positive tone for my day.

You can eventually look back at your previous studies to see how much you have grown through God’s word.
Questions to Ask During Your SOAP Bible Study Time
It can be hard to know what questions to ask yourself during your personal study time. The following questions are a good place to start when trying to get a better understanding of God’s word.
Scripture:
- What passage or verse did I choose to study?
- Is there a particular reason I chose to study these passages of scripture?
Observation:
- What is the main message or theme of this passage?
- Who is the author, and who was the intended audience?
- Are there any unfamiliar words or phrases that need further exploration?
- What emotions or thoughts does this passage evoke in me?
Application:
- How does this Scripture relate to my current life situation?
- What lessons or principles can I take from this passage and apply to my life?
- Is there anything specific I need to change or do differently based on this Scripture?
- How can I incorporate the teachings of this passage into my relationships, work, or daily choices?
Prayer:
- What do I want to thank God for from this Scripture?
- How can I ask God to help me apply these lessons in my life?
- Do I need wisdom or guidance on a particular matter of God’s word today?
- What do I want to talk to God about or seek His presence for during my prayer time?
Remember, these questions are meant to guide your reflection and study process. The beauty of the S.O.A.P. method is that there are many different ways to do it and you can tailor them to your personal needs.
Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them
While the SOAP Bible study method is highly effective, it may come with its own set of challenges.
Lack of time: In today’s busy world, finding time for Bible study can be a challenge. However, it’s important to prioritize your spiritual growth. Consider waking up earlier or utilizing small pockets of time throughout the day. Most mornings I wake up between 4:30 and 5:00 because this is the only time I have to myself. It is a small sacrifice I’m willing to make because the ultimate sacrifice was made for me.
Distractions: It’s easy to get distracted by technology or other responsibilities. Create a designated time and space for your study and turn off any unnecessary notifications or devices.
Lack of motivation: There may be times when you feel unmotivated or uninspired. Remind yourself of the importance of studying God’s word and the benefits it brings. A hard truth: If you neglect to prioritize time with God today, it raises the question of whether you truly desire His presence in eternity. Ouch!
Our commitment to spending time with God reflects our personal relationship with Him and our longing to be with Him forever.
